I'm having trouble settling on a design. I thought I had finally decided on the really intricate, flourishy one, but something just wasn't letting me love it, so I made a simpler one, and I kinda like that one, too. Also, wondering what you think about the different shapes of the labels....

The very first thing I do in the morning is make coffee, usually with my eyes still closed....

Dirty dishes...it's usually very difficult for me to get any work done at home because I get distracted and end up doing housework instead of working on projects...

aaaand because of this little booger, Daphne, who I got for my birthday.

she's just so cuddly, and really likes paper.

so when I get distracted at home, I walk down the street to Starbucks where I can zone out without distraction.
My boyfriend is a finance major, so he offers a very practical perspective to my work, and looks at it in ways that I never would.

I went to the farmer's market today after class to look for more potential wine bottle redesign candidates (by the way, Spain's section had by far the most well-designed bottles of all the countries in the wine aisle, why is this? I had trouble finding even one that needed to be redesigned).
I came across an interesting bottle of Honey Wine (Mead) and thought it would be a really fun project. Seeing as photography of any kind is strictly prohibited inside the market, I figured it would be just as easy to look up the wine online.
So apparently, this wine is so obscure (it's made in Germany and distributed from Florida), this is the only picture I could even find of it online (thank you, flickr). It'll have to do for now. I didn't want to buy it until I got some feedback. Do you guys think it'd be a good one to redesign? I think I could do a lot of fun typography with it.

It's the one next to the Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce.

My new and improved illustrative alphabet! A-F got cut off in the scanning process. I'm having trouble deciding what to do with the face...I want to make it clear that it is a face, and I'm afraid leaving out some sort of indication may lead to confusion. Any suggestions?

These are super cool sites, too. The designs make me think, "why didn't I think of that?"

I also usually plop down in a Barnes and Noble or Starbucks when I need to concentrate. Currently, my home studio is not conducive to creativity. I always get distracted by something...like reorganizing the pantry or cleaning out my closet. Hopefully this will change when I move in a few months, but until then, starbucks will have to do.

I love Flannery O'Connor's stories...they're all very strange and twisted with sometimes violent endings that tie into her strong roman catholic background.The descriptions of her characters are so vivid and crude...sometimes I feel like it brings out my dark side which translates into my designs.

I've been looking through CMYK a lot recently...

I hope this isn't an early sign of a hoarder...

Over the past few years, I've found myself collecting glass jars and using them as random containers around the apartment...I guess I like the idea of repurposing. Most of them are jelly jars, some are from behind the bar at work. My favorites are the Martinelli's apple juice jars. I don't even like apple juice, but they are the most beautiful jars...I thought the big one would make an interesting wine bottle...maybe...

The large jug-like jar in the middle is the Martinelli's apple juice bottle.

Lead article and image ideas

Well, I still can't post on the 4100 blog, but here are my ideas for my lead article....

Blue Ridge Country (still not sure if I want to leave Country there..) covers a broad area of any and everything that is the Blue Ridge Mountains...so to narrow it down, I think I'll focus on the outdoor aspects of the area (camping, hiking) as well as events such as music and arts festivals, and historical gems.

I found an article from Backpacker about how to make the best camp side pancakes. I thought this would be feasible as far as images go, as well as fun.

I changed the kerning and ledding(sp?) for say it don't spray it. Is this better? I also added a second color. Much happier with it..oh and I added more copy so it would be apparent that the poster is about H1N1.

After the critique I went back and changed the font in the smaller body copy so that "swine flu" "H1N1" and the url would be more readable.

Lisa Congdon's "Anatomie" is a collection of mixed media collage with the human body and nature as the subject. I love the beautiful textures and colors in these pieces. I have found them inspirational for multiple projects.

I am so obsessed with letterpress designs and my obsession has grown ever more over this past summer as I designed the invitations, programs, and pretty much all stationery for one of my best friends' weddings. I got a lot of inspiration from a few blogs including this one, poppytalk, which is a canadian based blog collecting inspiration from all sorts of designers, particularly handmade artists. I've recently had some travel drive woes so I haven't posted any new ad designs...but they're coming along just fine. Like the one I did post, the other two feature an illustration of a woman of a specific "knitch." For example, a business woman with the tagline, "Don't get caught out of the loop" and a mom and baby with "knit happens." I promise to post more soon.

There are so many images that come to mind with knitting, sewing, and whatnot...I'm trying to imply the feeling of handmade without getting too obvious. I'm also drawing from the definition of 'niche' which says a lot about the store's atmosphere.

So I've narrowed my possible rebranding clients down to two. The Fickle Manor and Knitch. The Fickle Manor was in one of my previous posts, and I still feel like I could do a lot with it. Then I found Knitch, an "all your sewing and knitting needs" shop also located in the Virginia Highlands. While I don't think the design for Knitch is awful, I keep envisioning a more modern, less literal design. I think I'll go ahead with designs for both, and then decide which I can do the most with. Maybe I'll even end up keeping both.
